TIME is running out fast for Doctor Who. The plan conceived in the pitiless minds of the Daleks to take over the universe with the aid of the outer galaxies is nearly ready to be translated into action; only the Doctor's possession of the vital Taranium, the ultimate destructive element, is keeping Earth safe from invasion for a little longer.

And the forces of evil are closing in on the Doctor (William Hartnell), left now with Steven as his only companion. Katarina, the Trojan girl, is gone; she sacrificed herself to save the space-travellers when they escaped from the dismal penal-colony planet Desperus. Now Bret the space-security agent who had become their ally against the Daleks, is gone too—shot down as a traitor by Sara Kingdom, acting on the orders of the Solar System's 'guardian' the ambitious Mavic Chen.

The Doctor's desperate journey back to earth in a captured space-ship, intended to bring warning of the coming of the Daleks, has proved all in vain. At the experimental station where he had hoped to find friends, he and Steven have found instead a terrifying fate : stumbling into the middle of an experiment, they have been de-materialised and whirled away to a lost corner of the cosmos, together with Bret's killer Sara.

In all this dark scene there is just one gleam of hope: dissension and bitter intrigue are beginning to emerge in the ranks of the Daleks' allies. ...
