BILLIE Piper will play Doctor Who's assistant in the new BBC series, it was confirmed yesterday.

The 21-year-old actress, married to former DJ Chris Evans, said age was "thrilled" to have landed the role of Rose Taylor along side Christopher Eccleston's timelord.

A BBC spokeswomen said: "Billie is beautiful, funny and intelligent. We needed to find a unique, dynamic partner. She hits the bill perfectly and will make an extraordinary Rose Tyler."

The cult sci-fi series returns next year.
