Though its title links it strongly to a fantasy TV series, "Doctor Who: The Unfolding Text," by John Tulloch and Manuel Alvarado (St. Martin's: $9.95), should not be mistaken for any of the Dr. Who tie-in novels. This is a minute investigation of the long-running series and its philosophical and sociological implications and intents. Unlike the hero of whom they write, the authors seem to take the Doctor's weekly adventures very seriously, indeed.
