It is a vast image that might have been created by aliens from Skaro, home planet of the Daleks.
It is really the work of a farmer near York who says he is the world's biggest Doctor Who fan. Each year Tom Pearcy grows a temporary maze out of maize and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Time Lord, this year he grew a Dalek, which comprises a million maize plants. "Like many kids, I grew up watching Doctor Who from behind the sofa and fell in love with the show," said Mr Pearcy. "I wanted to create a piece of art as a tribute to the 50th anniversary and also make it interactive so visitors can have their own adventures in time and space inside the maze." Having his own space/time adventure at York Maze was Conn Baker, the sixth Doctor, who materialised among the maize plants with a Tardis, above. He said: "It is fantastic to see
how much interest there is in the 50th anniversary of the show. I have been invited to join events all over the world this year, but what York Maze have created with their giant maize maze has to be one of the most imaginative ways to mark the 50th anniversary I have seen."
Even a Time Lord, however, cannot preserve the giant Dalek from the march of the agricultural seasons. The maze opens to the public today and closes on September 2. After that, the Dalek will be harvested and fed to cattle.
