It was the world's longest-running sci-fi series, but though it ended in 1989, keen collector David Howe told Pat Moore the show will always go on ...
Serious sci-fi enthusiast David Howe, 29, shares his Surrey home with wife, Rosemary, 32, and son, James, three. But in the spare room there's a Dalek, a Cyberman and a Silurian.
Besides being an honorary member of the Dr Who Appreciation Society, David also produces a quarterly Dr Who fan magazine with two friends. His home is packed with memorabilia from the cult show of the 60s, 70$ and 80s. "I first watched Dr Who in the late 60s," he explains, "when Patrick Troughton was the doc. I loved it but often used to end up hiding behind the sofa. I started to collect things related to the show when I was 13." And today David reckons he has between 400 and 500 different pieces from the series. "The Cyberman was made for me in 1982 but I bought the Silurian for £420 at auction this year."
David even met his wife Rosemary at a Dr Who convention. But since the birth of their young son James, he's had to cut down a bit on his Dr Who spending. "I know it's just a load of plastic and paper — but one day I am hoping to set up a permanent Dr Who museum so other fans can see my collection."
