Doctor Who, the Movie? Not Likely

[edit]

Doctor Who fans have had several key questions about the British time-travel show answered over the past few months. In March it was confirmed that former stars David Tennant and Billie Piper would appear alongside current TARDIS dwellers Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman on November's 50th-anniversary show. Then just a few weeks ago the BBC announced that Smith would be replaced as the Doctor by Scottish actor Peter Capaldi in December's Christmas special. But one important query remains: When, if ever, will there be another Doctor Who movie? Although it's been 47 years since the last one (1966's Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 AD.), Who exec producer Steven Moffat says fans should not get their hopes up about a big-screen venture. "When would we make [a film]?" he asks. "You don't want to derail the mothership of the TV show. As a consumer, I would think, 'So, we're only going to get one Doctor Who in three years as opposed to 26 [episodes]?' That wouldn't be an upgrade." Another problem: money. "Doctor Who would need a walloping budget," Moffat says with a chuckle. "That would be lovely. Who knows? I'm not against it—but it would have to not get in the way because it's less important than the TV version."
