[edit]

The Doctor returns for his third season since the 2005 revival of "Doctor Who." The time-traveling adventurer gains a new companion in medical student Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), who first teams with the Doctor (David Tennant) in the episode "Smith and Jones," which references the Doctor's sometime alias of John Smith.

Tennant's Doctor is witty and odd but with little tolerance for tyrants. Martha Jones, who replaces the much-liked Rose (Billie Piper) as the Doctor's companion, exudes grace and aptitude.

"Doctor Who" aired initially in Britain from 1963-89 and was revived in 2005 starring Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor. The Doctor travels through space and time in the TARDIS, a ship larger on the inside than the outside, which resembles a police call box.

In Season 3, the Doctor and Martha travel to Elizabethan London to meet William Shakespeare in one of the best episodes, The Shakespeare Code."

The season lags a bit when it should sizzle. The three-part arc starring the Doctor's longtime robotic foes, the Daleks, isn't as terrifying as previous Dalek episodes. And the three-part season finale is a bit jumbled.

Extras: 12 commentaries, Doctor Who Confidential, Music and Monsters, Freema's tour of the studio, David Tennant's Video Diaries, deleted scenes, outtakes.
