Doctor Who author and script editor Terrance Dicks materialised at Brentwood County High School as part of the Essex Book Festival 2008.

The countywide celebration involves more than 60 events and more than 50 writers ranging from journalists to novelists.

Mr Dicks, who worked on the sci-fi show when Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker played the Time Lord, went on to write more than 50 novelisations of TV stories and assorted original novels.

His latest book, Revenge of the Judoon, finds the Doctor and Martha investigating the theft of Balmoral Castle by intergalactic mercenary rhinoceroses.

Mr Dicks spoke to pupils about his work while Dalek Sec, leader of the Daleks, acted as security for the duration of the talk. Historical war novelist Allan Mallinson also made an appearance at Brentwood Library.
