AS time ticks by to the launch of TV's new Dr. Who, its star - Liverpool actor Paul McGann - is steeling himself for the hate mail.

The warning came from the last Time Lord, Sylvester McCoy, a friend of McGann's who has been advising him about the pitfalls of taking on the task of keeper of the Tardis.

"He said there are some people who are going to love you and think it is an inspired choice," says McGann.

"But he also said I should be prepared for the ones that hate you."

Early signs, however, are that he is on to a surefire winner. American viewers have already seen the 23 million movie-length show and were quick to pronounce it a hit.

We'll have a chance to see the BBC co-production with Universal Television on June Bank Holiday Monday.
