It's the "Doctor Who USA Traveling Exhibit," but a better name for it probably would be "Famous Villians I Have Watched on Doctor Who."
They're there in full size — Cybermen, Silurians, Sea Devils, Sontarans — and in masks (want to get a better look at Sutek before and after?)
But the best is at the beginning and the end. And between 10 a.m.-9 p.m. today local fans can get a closeup look at the Mountaineer Mall.
The traveling exhibit is the BBC's way of thanking American fans for their support of the 23-year science fiction program "Doctor Who." But you don't have to be a Who fan to appreciate the walk-through exhibit.
On entering. you are in the Tardis console room, complete with portion of the console. From there, you encounter one of the original Daleks from the show, life-size villians and masks, and the original K-9, with a good-bye message as you leave.
Anyone interested in costuming, special effects and mask-making will be entertained with the variety the BBC has pulled together for the tour.
Half of the admission fee — $2 for adults and S1 for children — will go to WNPB-TV, the local public television which broadcasts "Doctor Who" each Saturday.
Dan Sheehy, the tour manager, said the exhibit has been extremely popular with Who fans on the the 30-some stops so far on the two-year tour. The exhibit was built and finished in England, then shipped to the United States. The trailer is decorated with an original design of "The Tower of Rassilon," by a noted Doctor Who artist.
Since the trailer was prepared by BBC Enterprises, there was no difficulty in obtaining the display items, all actually used on the show. Another bonus is "Bessie," a 1953 English Ford Popular, done up by BBC effects to look like a 1910-era roadster, used during the Jon Pertwee episodes.
You might get a glimpse of Bessie on the street, for she is often taken to children's hospitals and other areas while the Traveling Exhibit is in town.
