BLACK Country Dr Who fans have helped local troops in the Gulf by sending them down-to-earth essentials such as toothpaste and soap.

The society, known as the Wolves of Ferric, collected more than 150 items, including books and baked beans, eta special meeting open to the pub-

The collection was organised following a pled from two soldiers from Darlaston for toothpaste and talcum powder.

The soldiers, horn the Staffordshire Regiment, wrote to their parents to tell them that the army woe short of these basics in Saudi Arabia.

Group organiser Roger Clarke of Dengerheld Lane, Wednesbury, said: "We are trying to make life a bit easier for our people caught up in the war."

The response of Dr Who members to the appeal was encouraging, but he would have liked more input horn the public.

"I was disappointed with the public. I thought they would have have shown support for the troops," he said.

The parcels will be sent to the Staffordshire Regiment, the Queen's Company of Royal Scots and other regiments which recruit from the Midlands.

Elderly people from Summit House in Darlaston have also collected toiletries for the troops. The Wolves of Fenric, which has about 200 members in the aleck Country, plan to hold more collections for soldiers from the area.

Roger added: "We think this has been a worthwhile effort and we hope that other similar organisations might copy our exam. and hold similar events."
