DR WHO fans were celebrating yesterday after a long-lost episode of the cult sci-fi classic was unearthed in New Zealand.
The 30-minute programme is one of 110 missing from a total 470 episodes of the long-running BBC TV drama first screened in 1963.
The down-under discovery is the first in a series of four called The Crusade and the black-and-white 16mm film features the first Doctor Who, William Hartnell.
For devoted fans, the discovery of the episode-is tantamount to stumbling upon the Holy Grail, especially since the find is the first for seven-years. It also raises the prospect that more lost treasures might by languishing elsewhere.
The film surfaced after the president of the New Zealand Dr Who Fan Club, Paul Scoones, and fellow fan Neil Lambess were told of its possible existence.
Mr Scoones said it was "the ultimate dream of any Dr. Who fan. It's like having a book with missing chapters".
Mobile cinema owner Bruce Grenville bought the film at a collectors fair about six months ago and has been screening it. Mr Scoones said archives show it was sent to New Zealand's Broadcasting Corporation in 1967 but then disappeared.
"It means there could be more in New Zealand and people are completely unaware of what they have," he said.
The film is new back, in London with the BBC, which will restore it and copy it for video release.
Mr Grenville allowed to keep the original which he hopes to sell at auction.
