THE Roman legions which once occupied Great Britain paid a return visit to an icy cold Cuckmere Haven on Thursday, setting up camp on the flat ground between the loops of the meandering river.
The tunic clad soldiers charged, together with a horse drawn blue and gold chariot, but what was a World War I field ambulance doing on the scene?
The cause of it all was a BBC unit films an episode of Dr. Who and the War Games for a mammoth 10-episode production in the Dr. Who series, to be screened this spring.
In this story, Dr. Who (Patrick Troughton), red tar Hines and Zoe (Wendy Padbury) find themselves taking part in various wars in the history of man.
But during a pause in filming the three did not look very warlike, and sat shivering on hill overlooking the Roman encampment. Nest day they were on location at Birling Gap.
This adventure will be Patrick Troughton's last for the series, which is planned to go into colour production with a new format for the next story. It is not yet known who will be the next Dr. Who.
The regular cast of 24, with some 40 extras, have been staying in Brighton, where several World War I scenes have been shot in the area recently occupied by the set for "Oh what a lovely war," also about World War I
The producer, Derrick Sherwin, and the Cuckmere Haven scene should be televised at the end of April or beginning of May.
