TOM BAKER, the fourth and most successful Dr. Who, has just turned down the chance of becoming Rector of ancient and respected St. Andrew's University in Scotland.
Said Tom: "Being nominated for Rector is a big honour and a great sign of popularity. Rut it would take up too much of the time I wish to dedicate to making Dr. Who one of the most popular characters in the world.
"Not only St. Andrew's has a fan following. There's also a Dr. Who up appreciation society at St. John's College, Oxford.
It's also a winner in twenty-two other countries, Including Holland where it has just won me the award as the best actor in TV science fiction."
Puzzling
Which makes Tom's failure to get financial backing for a cinema feature film of Dr. Who all the more puzzling.
He has the screenplay all set to shoot, the locations arranged. The cast of the T V show have promised to be available, and Vincent Price is keen to play the star baddle.
Ttom and him director James Hill are prepared to work for no pay, merely a percentage.
But Tom told me "I'm determined to make the film somehow. So maybe Dr. Who T V fans might like to invent a few hold and become shareholders.
The budget is around £500,000, which means 100,000 fans gambling a fiver each."
If you're interested, don't tell me—tell Tom at BBC Television, Television Centre, Wood Lane, London. W.12.
