TELEVISION'S most popular time traveller, Dr Who, is to carry on his interstellar commuting for at least one more series despite losing his ratings battle with the more down to earth inhabitants of Coronation Street.

The series' producer, John Nathan Turner, has put paid to rumours that Sylvester McCoy's first outing as the impressible Time Lord would be the doctor's last, with the news that McCoy will be back in action in a new series next year.

But it looks as though McCoy will have a rival for the attentions of the world's Who fanatics - a big screen version is due to be released next November to coincide with Dr Who's 25th anniversary.

The deal for the birthday big screen Doctor has just been completed after lengthy negotiations between the BBC and independent film producers Coast To Coast, the company behind Channel 4's own hi-tech hero Max Headroom.

The London-based company's John Humphreys said: "We intend to make it a big budget film with extensive and advanced special effects - I can promise you we won't be using the BBC's infamous quarry."

The company, whose producers Peter Listen and George Dugdale are currently in America involved in discussions with top US distributors, is already working on a new space age television show Roxscene.

Former 3, 2, 1 girl Caroline Munro has been cast in the title role as a robot who operates a pirate radio spaceship to beam pop videos down to earth.
