You'll notice that none of our staff confesses to binge-watching "Alaskan Bush People" or any other reality TV. But that doesn't mean their picks are all Emmy contenders.
What does draw us? Both fine dramas ("The Wire") and some less-demanding fun (comic books).
"Doctor Who: Though I was a science-fiction nerd from an early age, gobbling up the original "Star Wars" movies and reruns of classic "Star Trek," I never got "Doctor Who." It was too cheap, too disjointed, too ... British. Then, late one night a couple of years back, in the mood to binge but not wanting any Heavy Adult Drama of the prestige-TV era, I watched the first episode of the rebooted "Doctor Who." I think the bad guys were department-store mannequins come to life. It was silly, yes, but the writing was clever, the characters were captivating, and as I got further into the series, its humanist and uniquely British outlook was a refreshing antidote to the aforementioned Heavy Adult Drama of "The Sopranos," "The Wire," "Breaking Bad," et al. I didn't realize just how much I'd fallen in love with the show until I caught up with its current season — and immediately started scouring YouTube for episodes from the 1960s, trying to binge the original version from the beginning.
