[edit]

Eddie Izzard is to be the new Dr Who, claims ex-Time Lord Tom Baker.

Asked what the cross-dressing comic would bring to the BBC show, he told Radio Five Live's Julian Worricker: "He has an alien quality.

"Eddie Izzard is so mysterious and strange. He seems like he has lots of secrets. You always feel he knows something you don't, or has been somewhere you haven't been."

Baker, who played the TV role between 1974 and 1981, said in his chat yesterday that Izzard would wear the time-travellers outfits "with flair".

He added: "I like how he dresses. He could probably do his own wardrobe."

The much-loved sci-fi series returns in 2005 with a script by Queer as Folk creator Russell T. Davies.

Jonathan Creek star Alan Davies and Richard E Grant are the bookies' favorites to take the role.

A BBC spokesman said Baker's comments were "speculation" and no final decision had been made.
