THE mystery over The Doctor's "new" old face will be solved in the new series.

When Peter Capaldi, 57, signed up as the Time Lord it wasn't his first time on the BBC show. He was cast as Roman merchant Lucius Caecilius Iucundus in 2008 in The Fires Of Pompeii, with David Tennant, 44, playing the Time Lord (right).

Fans pointed out that when the newly regenerated 12th Doc (Capaldi) arrived and saw his new face, he must have recognised it from the past.

Last year he did make a reference to this.

He said: "Why did I choose this face? It's like I'm trying to tell myself something." Now it seems fans will discover the truth about why he chose an old mug. Show boss Steven Moffat, 53, tells Doctor Who magazine he will explain all this year.

He said: "We are coming back to that idea. We will be shooting the scene in question really quite shortly." The new series airs in the autumn. Guest stars will include comedian Rufus Hound, 36, and Game Of Thrones actress Maisie Williams, 18.
