Each week more than 100 million earthlings in 54 countries tune in their television sets to a creature with 13 lives, two hearts and six different faces in 21 years. He's Dr. Who, an absent-minded Time Lord, who has delighted audiences for more than two decades with what Time Magazine called an "engagingly slapdash combination of idiosyncratic British humor, melodramatic plotting and cutrate special effects, something like Star Trek as conceived by Monty Python."
To celebrate the 21st anniversary of the world's longest running science fiction series, Spirit of Light Enterprises presents TARDIS 21, an American salute to Dr. Who, November 23-25 at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare outside Chicago.
TARDIS 21 (The Anniversary Reunion of the Doctor in Season 21) will feature appearances and discussions with 17 favorite characters from past and present "Dr. Who episodes. Among the celebrities will be four of the very different looking actors who have portrayed the doctor during the series, a fact explained by the character's ability to regenerate 13 times, as well as an assortment of sidekicks, villains, aliens and technical staff.
The convention will offer screenings of "Dr. Who episodes, a multi-media history of this science fiction phenomenon, a show and auction of "Dr. Who artwork, programming in its first year of production.
In England where "Dr. Who" originates, the series longevity has made Dr. Who as much a cultural institution as Superman is in America. Last year's American convention not only attracted visitors from around the U.S., but also from England, Canada and Australia.
Prices are $60 for three-day admission; $50 for two-day admission. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door for $75 for three days, $65 for two days. The first 1,500 persons to purchase three-day admission tickets also will receive a complimentary limited edition poster signed by the Dr. Who celebrities participating in TARDIS 21.
