"AS SOON as the machine is operational, increase the brain stimulation," snarled Kate O'Mara, alias The Rani, in Dr Who (BBC 1).

But something went wrong.

"The increase in brain activity is not enough!" she wailed.

Couldn't have put it better myself. There is precious little stimulation of any sort in this latest revival of what was once a passing fair kids' telly show.

The new Doc is Sylvester McCoy who mooches around in straw hat and shapeless jacket, a Buster Keaton lookalike with all the charisma of a haddock.

His assistant Bonnie Langford, seems unable to muster any enthusiasm and the goodies in this episode are a bunch of weedy wimps with terminal acne who seem frightened of their own shadows.

The villains, known as Uraks, are fairly entertaining, if only because they seem w be afflicted with chronic flatulism.

This series is but a pale imitation of the great days of Hartnell, Troughton, Baker, Ice Monsters and Daleks.

Deep within the Beeb is a lobby which wants to kill off Dr Who for good. Maybe they have decided to make it this bad in order to prepare us for the axe.
