[edit]

SOME of The Doctor's worst enemies are set to come back to haunt him in the new Dr Who series - and one of them lives in Blackwood.

Sci-fi boffins may remember the frightening Sontarans, which first hit television screens in the 1973 episode "The Time Warrior," when Jon Pertwee played the show's lead role.

The BBC have decided to bring these scary extraterrestrials back to life with Christopher Ryan, of The Young Ones, playing the head Sontaran.

And among his terrifying troops is A-level student, Ryan Nicholls, 17, of Blackwood.

The performing arts and science student landed the role through his background artist agency and spent ten days on set.

Mr Nicholls has watched the BBC's Dr Who series ever since it was revived a few years ago.

He said he got a phone call from his agency saying the BBC was looking for someone around 5ft 3ins tall to wear a sontaran suit and luckily, he fit the bill.

He said: "I've always been into acting and when Dr Who came back in Wales I always knew I wanted to go on the show."

He added: "It took about an hour to put the suits on and we had to fill them out with talcum powder because they were so tight!

"The suit was quite uncomfortable to start with, but I soon got used to it."

Although Mr Nicholls does not have a speaking part in the show, he was still asked to attend a training session where he was taught how to walk and act like a Sontaran.

He said: "It was a really weird experience, but it was a good laugh."
