[edit]

ACTOR Tom Baker is set to quit as TV's Dr Who.

"I've had enough," he said yesterday. "I think I've done my bit."

Baker, 42, a former hod carrier on a London building site, took over the role from Jon Pertwee almost three years ago.

The B.B.C. Saturday evening children's programme has a large following of adults. Altogether there are 12 million viewers.

Baker said he plans to devote himself to "serious" acting.

The decision surprised the B.B.C. A spokesman said "His present commitments with us take him up to the end of March.

"It's true to say contracts for the 26-week series beginning next autumn have not been signed. But Tom's working relationship with us is very good."
