If he swivels the wrong way on his Dr No chair, 'stark Thompson, the BBC Director-General, sometimes sees Britain's masses scurrying on the streets below. Shuddering, he resolves to commission a BBC Four documentary about Hungarian Expressionist painters. Then he prays to Lord Reith for the continued successor Dr Who. In these multichannel days, the creaking drama inexplicably unites one nation under television. As we settle down for the Easter special isn't it all so wonderfully ironic? Look! David Tennant is Hamlet one week, the 27th reincarnation of an alien Time lord the next. How deliciously self-aware. Adult Dr Who fans are like the thirty somethings who sit in the pub discussing Bagpuss. It's not ironic, it's not edgy. It's a little tragic.
