The British are coming, the British are coming!
Today, British television shows such as "Doctor Who," "Downton Abbey" and "Sherlock" are beloved by many in the United States and Canada. The craze for British television and actors is similar to the 1960s British music invasion.
I am an avid fan of all these shows and pretty much anything British from Harry Potter to a good cup of tea. "Doctor Who" is a famous British sci-fi TV show that everyone knows but seldom seems to watch. It is a hilarious, action-packed show that always tells a fantastic story with lovable characters whether they are human or alien. It's been around for 50 years. "Downton Abbey" may seem like a castle full of drama, but it is a well-written show with incredible actors, costumes and sets. "Downton Abbey" mania has hit close to home for me. In nearby Jordan, Ont., a family-run tearoom called the Crown and Crumpet holds regular "Downton Abbey"-themed events.
Finally, "Sherlock," whose fans have to wait two years between seasons, is so popular that the buzz surrounding the finale of its third season was enough to crash the blogging site Tumblr. I think the BBC's "Sherlock" tops all the other films and TV shows about this character. Written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, this modern "Sherlock," starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, seems to have quite a following and the most-talked about reboot of the amicable detective. Overall, British television will certainly leave a legacy that will be difficult to follow. I think fans would agree that it's fun to be addicted to British TV shows.
