If you're bored with the ordinary, formulaic television shows which dominate the dial, a good alternative is Doctor Who. This show displays a mixture of science fiction, fantasy and adventure and is enjoyed by 110 million viewers in some 60 countries.

It chronicles the adventures of the Doctor, a traveler in time and space. He spends his time vanquishing an intriguing assortment of monsters and enemies causing problems throughout the galaxy.

He has a bizarre (but very original) spaceship, the Tardis, which is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. The Doctor is a Time Lord, an alien with two hearts and a body temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit. One of his strangest characteristics is his ability to regenerate into a new body form, making it convenient to switch actors in the role.

In fact, seven actors have portrayed the Doctor to date, and each one has given the Doctor a different personality. If you don't like one Doctor, you can tune in a few weeks later and watch reruns featuring a completely different one!

Nevertheless, the program does have its faults. The special effects are sometimes very poor, except in the most recent episodes airing through January. Don't expect any Spielbergian stuff here.

It also comes on at an inconvenient time, Saturdays at 11 p.m., perhaps making it necessary to videotape it and watch it at some other time. But hey, nothing's perfect.

So, if you're looking for something a little different to watch on television, give Doctor Who a try. Who know, you might just become loyal fan No. 110,000,001. Check your local listings for details.
