It's the moment Dr Who has dreaded for the last 40 years.

Sure, the Daleks always looked menacing and sounded terrifying.

But run up a set of stairs and you have them beat.

But now they've spotted rocket packs and can exterminate from on high, posing the ultimate threat to TV's doctor.

A BBC insider revealed: "The Daleks were always the Doctor's scariest enemy but now they can rise up from the ground and cause all sorts of havoc. The Doctor will have his work cut out."

New Doctor Christopher Eccleston, 40, and pop-star-turned-actress Billie Piper, 22, who plays his assistant Rose Tyler, will face the flying Daleks in the next series, up next year.

They took a look at them yesterday in Cardiff during a break from filming.

The insider added: "We're using more special effects and have given the Daleks three jet-powered thrusters to take off, although otherwise they still look the same."

The Daleks were voted TV's most evil villains in a GMTV poll last year.

But they faced extermination themselves following a row between the BBC and the estate of the late sci-fi writer Terry Nation who created them.

The differences were resolved.
