NINE episodes of Doctor Who which have been missing for decades have finally been tracked down to a store room 3,000 miles away in Nigeria.
The lost programmes – made in the 1960s and starring Patrick Troughton as the Time Lord – will be available on iTunes from today and later on DVD.
Phillip Morris, a specialist in recovering TV archive material, found the tapes had been gathering dust in West Africa after searching records of overseas shipments. Mr Morris said: "I remember wiping the dust off the masking tape on the canisters and my heart missed a beat as I saw the words 'Doctor Who'.
"When I read the story code, I realised I'd found something pretty special."
Five of the tapes belong to the six-part series The Enemy Of The World, made in 1967 and featuring Deborah Watling as the Doctor's sidekick, and ex- Emmerdale star Fraser Hines. One episode was already in existence, so the series is now complete.
The other four recovered tapes help to complete The Web Of Fear, made in 1968 and with Nicholas Courtney as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.
Fiona Eastwood, for BBC Worldwide, said: "We are thrilled with the discovery and very happy to be launching remastered versions of these treasured episodes as we celebrate the 50th year of Doctor Who."
