[edit]

GAY TV star John Barrowman will boost both his ego and his bank balance this week at a convention celebrating himself. Tickets cost up to £300 for the event in the US city of Chicago, where the flamboyant star will sing, chat and sign autographs for fans.

Camp Barrowman, 42, who hosts BBC Saturday night favourite Tonight's The Night, will also auction off memorabilia from his career.

He said: "I'm really looking forward to this big event based around me."

Pals say the Doctor Who and Torchwood favourite has taken the format of sci-fi show conventions and adapted it to one glorifying himself.

It may be the ultimate in vanity but that doesn't seem to bother fans in America, where Torchwood is the top-rated British show.

Tickets for the convention, called Torchsong 2009, have been selling well, despite admission prices ranging from £65 to £300.

It will be a sort of homecoming for Barrowman, who was born in Glasgow but raised just outside Chicago.

Other guests appearing at the event include John's sister Carole, three supporting actors from Torchwood and Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in Star Wars.

Shows

But otherwise it's Barrowman all the way as he plugs future money-making projects including the upcoming second volume of his autobiography I Am What I Am.

He will also share with fans tales of his life, including details of the full-sized Dalek he keeps in the hallway of his Cardiff home.

John just can't resist an audience.

On a recent holiday to Barbados he put on impromptu shows for the kids at his resort hotel every afternoon. British TV viewers will soon see him return to the role of bisexual hero Captain Jack Harkness in five new episodes of Torchwood to be screened over successive nights on BBC1.

He says: "I'm very proud of Torchwood and its success. "We started on BBC3 then got promoted to BBC2.

"We got the viewing figures, had success in the States and now we're on BBC1."
