Dr Who was the first British sci-fi serial and is the longest running sci-fi programme in the world. The first episode called 'An Unearthly Child' in which the Doctor and his time-space ship Tardis were discovered in a junkyard in contemporary London was aired on 23rd November 1963 on BBC TV. It was followed by three episodes set amid warring Stone Age tribes who had lost the secret of making fire. The Tardis design was copied from a police box, common on London streets, where the public could phone for police assistance. The now iconic Daleks were introduced in the second serial in December 1963 and were an immediate and huge hit. 'Hiding behind the sofa whenever the Daleks appear' has a strong memory for many families. A 2008 survey indicated that 9 out of 10 British children could identify a Dalek correctly!
