LONDON'S Museum of the Moving Image launches a special exhibition in July celebrating Dr Who, BBC-1's gone-but-not-forgotten science fiction series which began 28 years ago.
As Diary has reported, the die hard fans' battle to return their favourite programme to the screen after a two-year absence intensified recently with a number of well-meaning campaigns which have backfired thanks to the verbally abusive excesses of some Who supporters.
This MOMI exhibition, conceived without their assistance, may prove to be a greater focus on the question hanging over the show's future than any assault on BBC executives could hope to achieve. As well as the exhibition, which is scheduled to run until early December, it is hoped that Dr Who's social aspect will be considered in a number of seminars and talks to be held this summer and in October.
BBC head of serials, Peter Cregeen, told one of Diary's spies last week that a decision on the programme's next series, which will be produced independently, has still not been made. Perhaps this exhibition will serve as a kick up the backside to push the Beeb into making its mind up one way or the other?
