'We needed something English and youthful...I'm going to be more heroic'
A NEW-LOOK Dr Who with a sporting flavor was revealed today.
Peter Davison, who has taken over the role after Tom Baker's seven-year run, will wear a Victorian cricketing outfit for his Tardis travels around the universe.
"We thought we needed something English and more youthful," the actor, tanned after a holiday in Hawaii, said today: "I'm going to be a more heroic Dr. Who."
Davison, a Sunday afternoon cricketer himself, will not be seen in the part until next January because he has to record a series of his hit TV comedy Sink or Swim.
He is the fifth Dr Who in the series, seen by 98 million people in 38 countries. Davison said he did not want his run in Dr Who to be as long as Tom Baker's.
"I shall play it for at least two series but I don't think it's wise to do it for an enormous length of time. I think after a while I won't be able to bring anything to it."
Monsters
The show's producer, John Nathan-Turner, revealed that 60 per cent of its audiences were adults although it was originally designed for children.
"On the adventure-science fiction level it appeals to adults," he said. "The monsters are for the children and hopefully it also has some kind of message for the world."
What was the message? "I can't say," said the new—and baffled—Dr Who.
