Fans of "Sesame Street," "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," "The Woodwright's Shop" and other public television series can meet some of their favorite stars at the N.C. State Fair next week.

The UNC Center for Public Television invites the public to visit its pavilion, which will be located near Dorton Arena. Scheduled guests include: Mr. McFeely (David Newell) of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" on Friday, Oct. 17; Roy Underhill of "The Woodwright Shop" on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 18 and 19; host Bob Thomson of "The Victory Garden" on Tuesday, Oct. 21; and Susan (Loretta Long) and Gordan (Roscoe Orman) of "Sesame Street" on Saturday, Oct. 25.

Susan and Gordan will perform a variety show for children at noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. The shows are free.

IN ADDITION, the national "Dr. Who" tour will be a part of the Center's pavilion throughout the 10-day fair, which begins Oct. 17. This sophisticated mobile exhibition was built by the British Broadcasting Corporation in support of its television cult classic "Dr. Who," which is seen on more than 180 PBS stations nationwide.

The 23-year-old series is the longest running science fiction show in television history.

The animated roadshow features monsters and villains from the show, figures brought to life through various special effects and animation. Another feature of the exhibition is "Bessie," a bright yellow vintage car built for actor Jon Pertwee, the third Dr. Who. Fans will be able to see costumes and other "Dr. Who" memorabilia.

From "Dr. Who" fans to youngsters learning their ABCs with the help of "Sesame Street, there's something for everyone at the Center's fair pavilion.

"Almanac," with its usual knack for showing viewers what makes North Carolina special, begins its new season with a live broadcast at the N.C. State Fair at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

With a second live broadcast from the fair at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, "Almanac" features judging of 4-H livestock competition and lawn renovation techniques for counteracting this past summer's severe drought. Subsequent programs air at 7:30 p.m. each Tuesday, with episode repeats at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Produced by The UNC Center for Public Television in conjunction with the N.C. Agricultural Extension Service, "Almanac" covers the state profiling unique people and places and offering tried-and-true tips on horticulture, nutrition, home economics and do-it-yourself home improvements.

Each week host Mike Gray and his guest experts offer practical information for living life a little fuller. Gray's guest for this season of "Almanac" include Mecklenburg horticulturist Ted Caudle, gardening specialist Larry Bass and nutritionist Nadine Tope.

Scheduled episodes of "Almanac" feature:

  • A tour of a state-of-the-art food preparation center, the "Almanac" kitchen. (Broadcast Oct. 28 and Nov. 1.
  • Nutritionist Nadine Tope, who shares a variety of appetizing recipes using N.C. pumpkins. (Broadcast Nov. 4 and 8.)
  • Ted Caudle, Mecklenburg agricultural extension agent, who gives timely advice on drought-resistant plants to replace ornamentals that died due to summer's drought. (Broadcast Nov. 11 and 15.)

From the latest in home conservation techniques, the care of prized plants, inexpensive landscaping ideas and delicious recipes to profiles of Tar Heels worth knowing, "Almanac" covers a lot of ground — even when spotlighting topics and personalities that may be off the beaten path.
