It's a long time since Morecambe and Wise topped the must-watch list. While channelling his favourite Doctor, Weekend's television reviewer picks his small-screen highlights to look forward to
Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat's other hit show is also the cause of much excitement this year. Traditionally, the Doctor Who Christmas special is a tinselly bit of fluff designed to cleanse the palate after the emotional upheavals of the most recent series. But with the Doctor absent from our screens in 2016, there's an extra buzz surrounding The Return Of Doctor Mysterio, in which Peter Capaldi's Time Lord is joined by Matt Lucas (reprising his role from last Christmas) to save New York from an alien menace.
The story sees Doctor Who - normally the tweedy, nerdy antithesis of Marvel and DC's spandex superheroes - dipping a rare toe into the comic book genre, with Orphan Black's Justin Chatwin playing a costumed crusader called The Ghost, with Charity Wakefield fulfilling the Lois Lane role as investigative reporter Lucy Fletcher. Peter Capaldi is now totally at home in the lead role, channeling something of the alien charisma of Tom Baker. (And there's no greater compliment than that - though, at a push, I'd opt for Matt Smith as the ultimate Lord Of Time, hence rocking the bow tie in the picture. Bow ties are cool.)
