Actor Paul McGann is taking over the Tardis -in a new £5 million Doctor Who show.

The 36-year-old star of the Monocled Mutineer beat Sting, Simon Callow and Alan Rickman to become the eighth Doctor since the show began in 1963.

And the dastardly Daleks have got no chance with this Time Lord.

Paul said yesterday: "My favourite was the Yeti. The Daleks never did it for me - they couldn't run upstairs."

He added: "It hasn't really sunk in yet. I loved Doctor Who as a kid."

The long-running show was last seen in 1989, with Sylvester McCoy.

Despite protests from fans, the series was axed by the BBC when ratings fell to four million.

Now the Doctor is being resurrected in a two hour TV film made by BBC Worldwide and Universal Television in America.

Filming will begin in the next few weeks in Los Angeles - and another six twohour adventures could follow.

Fans of the show are over the moon about Paul's arrival in the famous blue police box.

Alexandra Loosely-Saul, of London's International Doctor Who shop said: "I am absolutely delighted. Paul has just the right silent mysterious quality that Doctor Who needs."

Previous doctors include William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison and Colin Baker.
