So: Peter Capaldi as the new Dr Who. Discuss. In fact he's probably the best possible choice: great actor, lifelong fan (in 1973 a letter he wrote as a 15-year-old fan was printed in the Radio Times), and with a remarkable facility for the kind of frantic dialogue the show rather sadly requires of its lead (it's going to be hard to get his performance as The Thick Of It's Malcolm Tucker out of our heads, though, and I for one am sad Armando Iannucci won't be allowed to write his dialogue). He'll make his first appearance at Christmas, and good luck to him. But even Capaldi, a genial man, seemed a bit perturbed by the high-octane razzle-dazzle of the Dr Who Live show which announced that he was taking the role on Sunday evening. Is this something that needs its own show now, instead of simply having Matt Smith morph into him in a future episode? And does it have to be one. of those shows you need earplugs and shades to watch? The overhyped kind that says he's "hero for a whole new generation" when we all know he'll probably be leaving in two years? What next, a whole Saturday night glitterball series of auditions - The Doctor Factor?
