FORMER pop star Billie Piper is set to appear in the BBC's new Dr Who series as the Time Lord's traditional female companion.
Billie, the 21-year-old wife of media tycoon Chris Evans, is said to be the favourite choice to play Rose Tyler, the Doctor's feisty new sidekick.
The star, who has given up singing for acting, is in talks with executive producer Russell T. Davies. He is said to be 'very impressed' with her abilities. And Billie has told friends she would love to work on the show.
A TV source said: 'They want a contemporary girl to play Rose to fit with the modern feel of this adaptation. Billie is their number one choice.
'Rose will be a quirky girl who also happens to be a psychic. She has a close relationship with the Doctor and there is quite a sexual chemistry between them.'
The 13-part series, which is costing £3 million, could see the Doctor fall in love for the first time Insiders have hinted that he may even share a passionate scene with Rose, who will talk openly about her love life, as well as chatting about current soap story lines.
Shallow Grave star Christopher Eccleston was confirmed last week as the new Dr Who after months of speculation. If Billie takes the part, she will follow in the footsteps of famous Dr Who companions such as Louise Jameson, who played rugged warrior girl Leela, and Bonnie Langford, who appeared as Melanie Bush
Billie won acclaim for her part last year in the BBC's Canterbury Tales. And she is about to make her film debut in The Calcium Kid along-side Orlando Bloom.
The BBC said yesterday: 'We are considering a number of people for the role of Rose We are not ruling Billie out.'
