THE debate over whether humans are shaped by nature or nurture is as old as the hills and, for the first time on television, The Truth About Me uses scientific testing, the latest psychology techniques, brain science and genetics to try to answer this age-old question. This fascinating three part series sees a trio of celebrities seek to discover the source of their defining trait, talent or characteristic. In tonight's opener, Torchwood star John Barrowman embarks on a journey of self-discovery to find out the truth about his sexuality. The perky TV star has been aware of this for as long as he can remember and is keen to discover if nature moulded him or if he was born this way.
Whereas his Torchwood character Captain Jack Harkness keeps an open mind while encountering all sorts of extraterrestrial activity, in real life John is adamant that he was born gay. That is not to say, however, that the I'd Do Anything judge has ever tried to conceal his sexual preference. "Going back, my family have always known, [as have] people that I thought have needed to know and are close to me," he said. "People who have wives and husbands don't go walking round saying 'Oh hi, I'm so and so and I'm straight'.
"I've just lived my life and I always feel that if you live your life and you live it honestly and are good to people around you that everything will be okay." John volunteers for a series of tests, including a DNA test in which he compares his DNA with his straight brother's to see if there is any significant difference that may explain his sexual orientation.
Later, the actor takes to the streets of LA to test the theory that the origin of homosexuality is linked to events in the womb that may affect the foetus. This documentary caps off a busy few months for the Scottish-born actor. He spent three months as one of the judges on I'd Do Anything, which proved to be a real ratings winner as Jodie Prenger won the role of Nancy in the revamped West End version of Oliver.
The second series of Dr Who spin-off Torchwood concluded in April. Earlier in the series, John's character enjoyed a passionate kiss with co-star James Marsters, and reports suggest that the former Buffy The Vampire star wasn't entirely comfortable with this.
Despite working on a number of projects, it seems as if John has enjoyed the occasional late night recently. In an interview with the Sun, John revealed that he and I'd Do Anything co-judge Denise Van Outen went skinny-dipping after sipping one too many glasses of wine.
He said: "I had such a great laugh with Denise and Zoe Tyler [the show's vocal coach). We were just sitting around telling stories in Andrew Lloyd Webber's living room in his castle in Ireland. We'd had a couple of glasses of wine so me, my partner Scott, Denise and Zoe all went skinny-dipping."
