SHE HAS landed one of the most coveted roles in telly but new Time Lord Jodie Whittaker says that becoming Doctor Who won't faze her. The Broadchurch star is well prepared for the fame that being the 13th Doctor will bring.

"Fortunately, that kind of recognition has come at a time where I'm old enough to know that it doesn't equal anything but I also now know that I don't need to fear it, either," she reveals.

"It wasn't until I did Broadchurch that I started getting recognised a lot more."

Jodie, 35, played murdered Danny Latimer's mother in the ITV drama. The decision to make the Doctor a woman has certainly been a controversial one. Fortunately Jodie ignores the nay-sayers... including the person who told her never to become an actor!

"I was obsessed with playing make-believe when I was a kid and I guess that never wore off. My careers advisers told me it was childish to think I was going to go to drama school and become an actor. Thank God I didn't listen!"

Jodie will take up her role next year. The current Doctor, Peter Capaldi, 59, will regenerate into female form at the end of the Christmas episode.

Huddersfield-born Jodie, who has a two-year-old daughter with US actor and writer Christian Contreras, says: "To be able to play someone who is literally reinvented on screen, with all the freedoms that brings... what an unbelievable opportunity. And added to that, to be the first woman in that role.

"For anyone taking this on, you have to want to fight for it, which I certainly had to do. I know there will have been some phenomenal actors who threw their hats in the ring."

And Jodie has a few special people she can get advice from, too. "I know Matt Smith, Chris Eccleston and David Tennant. Oh, and let's throw in David Bradley [who plays the first Doctor in the Christmas extravaganza]! Four Doctors!"
