BBC chiefs call time on Dr Who's police box after 20 years

DR WHO's famous police box time-machine is set to fade away for ever.

BBC chiefs plan to axe the battered blue box—which has housed the Tardis for 20 years—because young viewers do not know what it is supposed to be.

Dr Who producer John Nathan-Turner said yesterday: "Police boxes are a thing of the past.

"I think the last one in England went about four years ago and a whole generation of children has grown up believing the box to be a Tardis and nothing else."

He plans to phase out the police box during the next series of Dr Who.

The new Doctor, Colin Baker, said: "It's a shame but I take John's point.

"Originally the Tardis was supposed to blend in with its surroundings and when the show started there were police boxes all over the place."

Nathan-Turner and his team are now scratching their heads to think of something familiar to replace the police box.

What do you think the Tardis should become? Write to The Sun, 30 Bouverie Street, London EC4Y
