All you ever wanted to know about your favourites

BEHIND every successful TV character is a full-scale life story. Scriptwriters on all long-running series build up elaborate biographies of the people they create ... their jobs, their loves and their hates. Here in detail are the "lives" of some of your favourite characters.

DR. WHO (BBC-1) Born: outermost limits of the Universe. Humanoid. Member of the race of Time Lords who have the secret of Space and Time travel.

NOT the cosiest of companions. He can be testy and doesn't like foolish questions.

But then he's a scientific genius.

Dr. Who has a magical ability to alter his shape. From his original shape he hits changed three times since we met him first in November, 1963.

First, he shed the once-familiar white-haired figure for a younger looking dark-haired one. At the same time he became less sharp-tongued and more cheerful.

Dr. Who Mark III was taller, rather slim and athletic. He loved gadgets and machinery, and wore a velvet, jacket, frilled shirts and a swirling cape.

Dr. Who today boyish and erratic rather than suave.

He ran away from the Time Lords because he was bored. He wanted to see new planets, meet new civilisations. He likes freedom and hates evil and injustice:

REAL LIFE: Tom Baker.
