They wanted to make a shiny, foil-wrapped new pilot for the nineties; they also wanted to remain faithful to a series which started in 1963 and created 30 years of convoluted continuity. They wanted action adventure with Hollywood-type special effects, sprawling sets and name actors; they also wanted sparky, magical, offbeat sci-fi. They wanted it to be accessible to a whole new American audience; they also wanted to appease the hard core of longtime British fans. And so, into the yawning chasm between these two sets of stools, with a few scuffs either side, glides the sad, wheezing, groaning coffin of Doctor Who.
