With the end-of-the-universe challenges constantly haunting "Doctor Who," it's surprising the time-traveler remains so cheery -- most of the time.

As the nutty series returns to Sci Fi at 7 p.m. Friday with a special called "The Runaway Bride," The Doctor (David Tennant) flies solo in the TARDIS, his spaceship, still feeling the sting of losing his traveling companion Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) last season.

He doesn't have much time to grieve, however, because bridezilla Donna (Catherine Tate) appears out of thin air. She's been zapped to the TARDIS from her wedding on Earth, and she's none too happy with The Doctor. They try to get her back to the church, but as is always the case with The Doctor, unimaginable complications arise.

This time he faces down a giant spider-woman and menacing robot Santas -- all the while spouting witty one-liners -- before once again saving the Earth. Tennant is amusing as the wisecracking Doctor, who doesn't fret about the problems he is duty-bound to solve.

Duty throws The Doctor into another seemingly impossible position in the Season 3 opener at 8:30 p.m.: He must save the people in a hospital that's been transported to the moon. Here he meets Rose's replacement, med student Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), who seems to be game for anything. How else to explain her relative calm when alien rhino cops attack the hospital in search of a killer?

I know what you're thinking: Alien rhino cops? Robot Santas? What?

"Doctor Who" does have silly plots and cheesy special effects, but those are the very reasons to watch. The Doctor and "Doctor Who" never take themselves too seriously, and that's what makes spending time with them so fun.
