Doctor Who

★★★★☆

A crucial Doctor Who question has been answered. Where is the bedroom in the Tardis or, to rephrase, when does the Doctor sleep? In his regeneration as Peter Capaldi, the new Doctor, whose first episode was previewed on the London Southbank last night, finds himself recuperating in a Victorian bedroom (Andrew Billen writes). He is incredulous that humans reserve a whole room in which not to be awake. As for sleep, the Doctor catnaps while listening to people who bore him.

There was no catnapping — or boredom — at the BFI during Deep Breath, a feature-length episode that the rest of humankind will see on August 23. Some scenes were longer than we are used to, including a splendidly awkward attempt at air-clearing between the new Time Lord and his companion Clara (Jenna Coleman), furious at having lost young Matt Smith.

The episode started with a dinosaur wading down the Thames. The main plot involved robots assembling themselves from human parts. Although Capaldi's Doctor arrived befuddled and suffering from face blindness, he conveyed authority and experience. I was not the only Whovian to depart wondering if the former Malcolm Tucker might not prove the best Doctor ever.
