DON HENDERSON achieved a long-cherished ambition the day he joined the cast of "Dr Who".

The gravelly-voiced star, who has a leading role in the Time Lord's latest adventure, Delta and the Bannerman, has always been a keen fan of the show and admits to trying to pull a few strings to get in on the action. "I'd been angling for ages to get on the show," he says. "I made is clear to the BBC that I was available if they needed me. I'm a bit of a science fiction nut and I've adored 'Dr Who' for years.

"The series has had such a wonderful reputation over the years I think most actors would love to be a part of it. It's a British institution."

Don, best known for his long-running series, "Bulman". plays one of the good doctor's adversaries - a really nasty piece of work called Gavrok.

Although Don is out to zap the doctor on screen. in reality he rushes to his defence and advocates a long. trouble-free run for the series.

It has been clinging to its life since BBC boss Michael Grade put the boot in and ordered the "Dr Who" team to pull their socks up ...or face extermination.
