Marketing idea of the week: The Channel 10/36 Friends organization has come up with a novel inducement for new members: instructions for knitting a 15-foot scarf.
The premium is offered to people who donate to the public television support organization during broadcasts of "Dr. Who".
Dr. Who is a time traveler who, during his journeys, wears a colorful 15-foot scarf. The British Broadcasting Corp. program has developed a cult following here.
Tom Axtell, development director for Channels 10 and 36, said the Instructions for the scarf were obtained by a member of the Renegade Time Lords, a Dr. Who fan club based at the University of Wisconsin — Milwaukee.
"The instructions tell the official BBC sequence of colors and how many rows for each one," Axtell said.
They don't tell one how to travel through time, he added.
