Q

I HAVE a toy Dalek in its original box. It is made by Marx and I was given it in the mid-Sixties. The toy and box are in good condition.

I was never much of a fan of the Doctor Who series so the toy never really came out to be played with. Is this collectable? - Michael Hunter, Byfleet, Surrey

A

THE Daleks were first made for the series by the Shawcraft Company and were based on the designs of Ray Cusick. Rumour has it BBC executives objected to their look but their appearance in 1964 really boosted the show's ratings.

The very first Doctor Who toys were the battery-powered Daleks made by Louis Marx in 1964. These make more than pounds 200 in great condition today. You are lucky enough to own one of those early gems. The Holy Grail for Doctor Who collectors is to get hold of a model used to make the show, which can sell for thousands.

GRAPHIC: Daleks & the 3rd Doctor Who, Jon Pertwee Batmobile could fetch £450
