The Max Headroom impostor appeared by surprise again on some Chicago-area television screens Tuesday night, this time during the sports segment of the 10 p.m. news on WMAQ TV (Channel 5). But a station spokesman quickly said that Tuesday's incident "was a joke" perpetrated by Mark Giangreco, WMAQ sports anchor. On Sunday night, the Max Headroom imitator showed up on WTTW-TV (Channel 11) and WGN-TV (Channel 9). Engineers said the image had to come from a powerful pirate transmitter. According to a spokesman for Channel 5, Giangreco got the news tapes of the previous pirate transmissions and spliced a few shots into his sports highlights. Nick Aronson spokesman for the station, said he did not know if anyone besides Giangreco knew in advance of the prank, which sparked numerous phone calls to the station.
