I live in the south of France now, but all the Brits over here are set up to get the TV from home. There's not much else to do in this very quiet little village except listen to the bark of a lonely Labrador, so I find myself watching an awful lot of television.
In the early evening, when I'm trimming the radishes or pressing the garlic, I'll watch the news. Usually C4 or Sky News. It's like watching Mr & Mrs. A man with an orange face and a woman with luscious lips standing around looking uncomfortable. Why are all the newsreaders standing up these days? They've probably all got haemorrhoids! I can never remember a damn thing they say, because I'm too busy watching the woman's luscious lips. I can't tell you what I'm thinking, but if I were a Roman Catholic, it would be called a mortal sin!
Sometimes, it's nice to sit down in front of Corrie. Don't you think I'd make a wonderful character? Maybe I could live in a room above the Rovers and all the mature ladies would pop up to see me. Nothing lecherous, of course. They'd just enjoy my company because I'm a good listener.
Later, when I'm scouring the pans and ironing the elaborate pillowcases, I might catch a bit of that Big Brother programme. I can't understand why everyone is so snidey about the poor people on there. They're just young men and women who want to be famous. I wanted to be famous when I was young. Life is so f*****g boring, that being famous is the only option that most people have.
There are some things I never miss: cricket or rugby on Sky, and Paxman on Newsnight. He always reminds me of Nijinsky. I don't mean the dancer; I mean the racehorse. If someone gives him an answer he doesn't like, he whinnies like Nijinsky.
I did watch a little bit of the new Doctor Who and I think the new fella, Tennant, is excellent. Isn't it wonderful they're getting eight million viewers? My only disappointment is that they didn't ask me back. I would have liked to play the Master. You see, the Master and the Doctor are like Holmes and Moriarty: two sides of the same man. That would turn a few heads, wouldn't it?
