We're shocked by the power... of time travel. Kylie Minogue in an episode of Doctor Who? You'd be hard-pressed to come up with anything quite so, well, gay, unless you somehow raised Judy Garland from the dead and had her duet with Madonna.

"How the hell did we swing that one?" laughs executive producer/ head writer Russell T Davies. "It was all Will Baker's doing [Kylie's creative director]. He's a big Doctor Who fan and he came to our Series Three launch way back in March. He had a drink afterwards and asked if Kylie could be in an episode. I said yes, but honestly thought it was the wine talking. The next day he called up. I got told, 'Go to London NOW and meet Kylie,' and did. I thought at least I'd be able to say I'd had a cup of tea with her. But I met her, she liked the idea and the character, fancied doing it, and said yes."

The result is coming your way on Christmas Day. But are the rumours true that the character Kylie's playing is, in fact, going to be the Tardis in human form? "That's a load of bollocks," Russell laughs. "No, she's playing a proper character. Like Catherine Tate in the Christmas special last year, she's playing the Doctor's companion. It's a whole character from start to finish. If this was Amy Winehouse I'd be worried, but it's a very public show, so there's no way we'd cast someone who couldn't act."

Talking of Ms Winehouse, GT wonders if there was any diva behaviour on show from La Minogue. "She was lovely to work with. I've never worked with someone that status before — she's a real icon. We dreaded that she'd want her own hairdresser, driver, publicist, etc, but there was none of it. She was happy to go into the make-up truck like everyone else. It was that simple. I gather she loved mucking in."

Voyage of the Damned will be shown on BBC One, Christmas Day (Dec 25th)
