[edit]

The BBC has announced its new Dr. Who: the 26-year-old actor Matt Smith will take over the role of the time traveler in the long-running television series of the same name. Mr. Smith, who has appeared onstage in London and on several television shows including the political drama "Party Animals," will be the 11th actor, and the youngest, to star in the popular series. He will begin filming this summer and first appear on the show in 2010. David Tennant, the show's current star, had announced he planned to leave after four special episodes scheduled to be broadcast this year. (Mr. Tennant, 37, is starring in "Hamlet" at the Royal Shakespeare Company in London. He returned to the lead role this weekend following a monthlong absence after surgery for a slipped disc.) "Dr. Who" is shown in the United States on the Sci Fi Channel and BBC America.
